Subject: Oil Pressure???
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got an '01 4.7 4X4 3.92 dak. so... where the heck is the oil pressure gauge supposed to sit while cruising? Mine is at the H line. At idle, it usually creeps back down to middle. But as soon as I take off, it quickly climbs back up to the H threshold. 6000 miles on truck... been doing this since new.

Thanks
Dan

dkeller,

By the H line I assume you're talking about the mark that's a little more than halfway between the midpoint (40 psi) and the max line (110 psi). If that's the case, I wouldn't worry too much. Mine normally sits about at 40 at idle (guessing about 45 psi, assuming the guage is roughly linear in its readout) and a little below the other mark while cruising (gussing about 65-70 psi). My old dakota did the same thing (my old one being a '94 2WD 3.9).

One more thing...I've heard that running synthetic oil or really lightweight oil can cause greater fluctuation in oil pressure, as would a clogged oil passage. I'm no expert, but I would assume that oil pressure would normally be lower at idle because the pump is not pumping hard, and that it would be higher under load because the engine is spinning at a higher RPM (and consequently the oil pump would be running faster). Again, unless the pressure differences are really drastic (almost no pressure at idle and almost maxed out under load) I wouldn't worry too much.

Make sense?

You are correct with the oil pressure and engine speed. At idle, the oil pressure resides around 15-25psi and at cruise it can be as high as 70-80psi.

Factory specs: Min = 6psi (Idle) / Max = 30-80psi (above 3000rpm)

Thinner oils (5w40) will show a lower oil pressure at idle than a standard grade (10w4- or 15w40) but a thinner (synthetic) 5w50 will also show a slightly higher pressure at higher rpm's.

(I run 5w50 Synthetic personally)
