Subject: Tailgate IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota Extended cab, with the 3.9L V6 and when it get really cold, like below zero my tailgate does not lock and stay shut. Has any one else had this problem or does any one know what to do? Thanks.

Message: I experienced that a few times but just keeping the hinges and all lubed up with some WD-40 did the trick. I have noticed on my 98 that compared to some of the older ones, like 93's, my tailgate is quite lighter, but i actually need to close it a little harder to engage the lock when real cold. Give it a try, it is a cheap place to start.

Message: Noticed the same thing with my 2000, you just got to slam it hard, even though I don't want to hurt my baby, it is necessary....

Message: guy lube is good idea and slamming is not what did the trick for me just look at the locking mechanisms at either side and you'll see a slider , its hard to explain but you see it, its on the inside or if sit on your tailgate its on that side not the body side, just mess with that slider, thats the part that gets stuck in cold weather. hope this helps better than slammin your girl. she doesnt deserve that kind of abuse.

Message: I had the same problem with my ’88. The latches and handle assemblies all had gotten gummed up with crud over time. I took the access door off the inside of the tailgate to get at the inside of the handle and sprayed it down with some brake cleaner, then some lubricant. I also cleaned and lubricated the latches on the edges of the tailgate. Haven’t had problems since.

Message: Yup had the same thing-took it back to the dealer (I was getting sick of slammin it shut all the time) and they took it apart and did a 're and re' (whatever that means-all I can tell is the latches and stuff look new) Seems to work fine now...they fixed it under warrenty in my case

Message: there is a TB # 239894 Dec.'94 Pickup box tailgate hard to latch in cold temps. I had the same problem with my "94- took it to dealer andthey fixed it. It is important to clean out the latching mechanism and lube it, especially if you have hauled something like mulch in your truck.
